All Photos: Ronnie Gallagher 46. Maiden Tower showing perimeter ledges and safety barriers on each floor. This sketch seems to indicate that the floors were added later for tourists. 47. Section of tower showing the well and underground cistern two floors above the ground level. 48. Photo inside the tower, showing location where the top of the well originates. 49. Photo taken by camera
lowered inside the well on second floor. Photo reveals light
where there seems to be a blocked-off entrance. 50, 51. Stairway leading
up to one of the slitted windows in the tower. Sunlight enters
the narrow-slitted windows, which flare outward to illuminate
the interior on its downward passage. The windows may have been
designed so that light would fall upon sacred niches on the opposite
wall from the window. See niche in Photo 51. The purpose of the
niche has yet to be identified. |
