Sofi Hamid

Back to Photo Essay 1

Sofi Hamid is closely associated with images of camels. Legend has it that the reason why this cemetery is located in the middle of "no-man's land" is that in the 14th century when a certain merchant from Arabia-a sort of itinerant mullah-was dying, he told his fellow companions to bury him wherever his camel came to rest. And thus, Sofi Hamid, came into existence in the middle of nowhere. Photo: Betty Blair
