Sofi Hamid

Back to Photo Essay 1

"The Star and Crescent" are associated both with Islam and Turkism as this was the official emblem of the Ottoman Empire, and has since been adopted by Turkey. One of the primary reasons why folklorists made no serious investigation about Sofi Hamid during the Soviet period was that topics related to pan-Islamism and pan-Turkism were forbidden. To further one's career, folklorist were killed because they delved into such topics. However, when it comes to Sofi Hamid, it is impossible to seriously delve into the meaning and traditions of the folk belief without exploring religious and nationalistic identities. To ourknowledge, no academic work - either Azerbaijani or foreign - has been carried out at Sofi Hamid.
