Spotlight on Oil Barons of the Last Century

Ismailiyya Building

At present, this building serves as the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences. It was built by Oil Baron Musa Naghiyev (1849-1919), purportedly the wealthiest of all Azerbaijani oil entrepreneurs at the beginning of the 20th century. He built this Gothic style monument in memory of his son Ismayil (1875-1902) who died of tuberculosis at the age of 27. Naghiyev dedicated this building to the service of the Baku Philanthropic Society. Interior photos of this grandeur architecture can be seen in the Summer 2005 (AI 13.2) issue of Azerbaijan International. Search at AZER.com.
