Oil Rocks in the Caspian

Birthplace to a New Trend in Soviet Art

"Accident on the Oil Rigs". The sea always threatens. This painting recalls the tragic accident that happened when an oil rig collapsed and several workers died, including Koverchkni who had been among the pioneers in 1949 who had first extracted oil at Oil Rocks. This painting here in dark blue with the helicopter hovering above the pier commemorates that tragedy. The artist Tahir Salahov explains: "This is not Socialist Realism; it's Severe Art. Few dared to paint like that. But my father had already been executed so what else was there to be afraid of?" This painting here has been computer-enhanced and posterized from the original to emphasize its power and strength.
