Prisoners were given only the most meager of rations for the day - a small piece of bread and sometimes some gruel made from vegetables. The elder prisoner seated at the table knows to eat only small portions at a time. The newcomer in the upper left - hand corner seems to have already foolishly - eaten his entire ration.
