Sofi Hamid

Back to Photo Essay 1

When we first visited this cemetery in 1993, there was a "wreath" around the camel's neck made of tiny strips of cloth, each representing a burden or concern - a prayer or plea. People consider this cemetery to be a holy place and visit it to make appeals to Sofi Hamid and God to solve their perplexities in life. These days, these "prayers" are tied to a string hanging near the wall behind the camel, not around its neck. Photo: Farid Ashrafoghlu
