 Believed
to have been built in the 12th century, this fortress is now
a living historical monument and may be accessed all the way
to the roof from the stairway inside. A beautiful panorama of
the entire city and the sea awaits those who make the rather
strenuous climb. There are no elevators. In the novel, Ali often
mentions that he would go up on the roof of his two-story house
in the Old City and look out across to the Maiden's
Tower and the sea behind.

Bay. Early 10th century.
