Jazz
and Blues Festival
  Baku's second annual Caspian Jazz and
Blues Festival, organized by American Voices, will be held May
918. This year's theme is "Year of the Big Bands."
Featured performers will include Maynard Ferguson and his Big
Bop Nouveau Band, Vagif Sadikhov, Emil Mammadov and violinist
Sabina Rakcheyeva, just returned from her studies at Juilliard.
Werner Englert will direct the newly formed Baku Big Band.
The Caspian Jazz and Blues Festival is being offered as a gift
to the city of Baku from the U.S. Embassy to Azerbaijan, the
Azerbaijan Ministry of Culture, American Voices and the members
of the corporate community. Jazz workshops will be held daily
from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Bulbul School and the Jazz Club. Participation
in all workshops and jam sessions will be free of charge.
All concerts will be held at the Republican Palace with the exception
of the gala Jazz Dinner Dance, which will be held at the Hyatt
